Center for Brazilian Studies

The Center for Brazilian Studies (CBS), a non-profit establishment affiliated to the Institute of Latin American Studies (ILAS), Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), came into place on May 19, 2009 when the CASS president Chen Kuiyuan and the Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva jointly inaugurated it. The CBS is missioned to promote academic and public understanding of Brazil, facilitate mutual communications of all sectors of the Chinese and Brazilian societies, and to advise government policy-making on the bilateral relations. As a breaking effort to entail expertise knowledge and organizing service, the center devotes itself to upgrading and broadening relevant studies as well as networks of Brazilian affairs in and out of China.

Functions
1. To advance academic research activities;
2. To develop effective means to strengthen the Sino-Brazilian exchanges ties;
3. To involve in official policy consultations;
4. To collect, display, and educate on historian, cultural, and humanity achievements of Brazil in China;
5. To publish, translate representing works of the Brazilian authors;
6. To train and lecture on the language and other practical skills for know Brazil;
7. To facilitate ad hoc or regular business or sociality events for entrepreneurs;
8. To issue regular bulletins, working papers and investment reports etc;
9. To accumulate literatures on Brazil and make them accessible to the general public;
10. To host and reserve talents dedicated to the mutual understanding and friendship.

Organization
The CBS authority remains with its board which is composed of renowned scholars, retired diplomats, leading entrepreneurs, media professionals and rest activists committed to the CBS objectives, the board gathers regularly to review and advise the CBS working agenda.
The CBS directors and secretaries-general take care of its routine business. Ambassador Chen Duqing (in Brazil 2006-2009) is heading the team as the director while Direcotr General of the ILAS Wu Baiyi assists him as executive director. Two ILAS professors He Shuangrong and Zhou Zhiwei take respective positions as the CBS Deputy Director and Secretary-General.

2. Brazil’s international strategy;
3. Brazil’s strategy for regional integration;
4. Brazil’s strategy for energy and natural resources;
5. The Sino-Brazilian relations and the South-South cooperation;
6. The BRIC development and the international system.
